Our thanks to everyone who supported SB 719, ERPO.

By Penny Okamoto, Executive Director of Ceasefire Oregon

We’ve heard so many wonderful comments from people about passing of SB 719, Extreme Risk Protection Order. Thank you so much! It’s great to get such kind and supportive feedback but it’s very important to us to give credit where credit is very much due.

First, SB 719 passed because of YOU! You folks never gave up, never stopped calling, and never stopped pushing your friends and legislators.. You folks astound us all! Genuine grassroots work was crucial to passage of SB 719. (Never, never doubt that.) Thank you!

In addition, passing SB 719 took a lot of work from many sectors including national gun violence prevention (GVP)  groups, state GVP groups, faith groups, social justice groups, public health groups and especially from the courageous survivors who shared their stories.

CSGV (Coalition to Stop Gun Violence) did a lot of the heavy lifting early in the process and throughout. Christian Heyne, Josh Horwitz, and the entire CSGV team did critical work on this bill.

Right alongside CSGV doing the heavy lifting was the Oregon Alliance for Gun Safety, including Jake Weigler, Jenn Lynch, Elise Gautier, and many others.

Always out in front of GVP are the Mighty Moms (and Dads!) of Moms Demand Action and Everytown. Thanks to all of you.

Thank you to Gun Owners for Responsible Ownership (GOFRO), Paul Kemp, Americans for Social Responsibility, Jenna Yuille, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Rev. Chuck Currie, Pastor Mark Knutson, Rev. Lynne Smouse Lopez, Oregon Public Health, the Brady Campaign, Oregon NOW, Oregon Central Coast NOW, Ceasefire Oregon Central Coast, Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence (SmartGunLaws.org), Robbie W. (for endless support and smiles), Rep. Alissa Keny-Guyer, Rep. Jennifer Williamson, Cloud Four, Senator Prozanski, Senator Steiner Hayward, Senator Boquist, all the Dems who voted for SB 719, and every single person who donated, called, emailed, or just gave us a smile of encouragement.

My apologies to all of those I did not directly include above. Some of you are shy about your contributions and some of you guard your privacy. To all of you – thank you.

All the work either directly helped pass SB 719 or enabled Ceasefire Oregon fight off dozens of dangerous gun bills in 2017.

My personal thanks to the past and present board of directors of Ceasefire Oregon and the Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation. Our wicked-smart, courageous, generous, and talented board works quietly behind the scenes to continue our work against gun violence.

Again, thanks to all of our supporters. Truly, this is your victory.  You created a law to compassionately disarm people in crisis before they can do something they will always regret. Finally, a special note of love and thanks to Laura Whitson’s family and the family of Katelynn Armand. Thank you for your bravery and testimony. You and your families will live in our hearts forever.
