Why Don't We Treat Gun Safety Like Car Safety?

By Penny Okamoto, Executive Director of Ceasefire Oregon

In this article, Clair McCarthy, M.D., notes that gun violence kills about as many people as car crashes, and yet we treat the two issues very differently. With cars, people accept that they are dangerous and that we should make laws and rules to try to limit injury and death. But with guns, a lot of people claim that any efforts to reduce gun violence amount to taking away their rights.

She concludes with a call to think of gun safety as a public health issue.
