New Study Analyzes Effects of Background Checks Repeal In Missouri

By Penny Okamoto, Executive Director of Ceasefire Oregon

In 2007 Missouri repealed a law requiring background checks and licenses for all gun owners. A new study by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research showed that after this law was repealed, firearm deaths in Missouri increased by 23 percent (55 to 63 more murders annually from 2008 to 2012).

This study provides compelling confirmation that weaknesses in gun laws lead to deaths from gun violence.
