Expanding Background Checks Will Help Combat Gun Violence and Domestic Violence

By Penny Okamoto, Executive Director of Ceasefire Oregon

Gun violence is often linked to domestic violence. One in five homicides in Oregon is connected to domestic violence, and guns are the primary weapons used in these murders.

By passing SB 1551, the Oregon Legislature has the the opportunity to close a dangerous loophole that allows domestic abusers to acquire guns. SB 1551 requires background checks on almost all gun sales in Oregon, and it will save lives. Here Vanessa Timmons from the Oregon Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and Nancy Mead from the National Organization of Women urge the Legislature to close this loophole and combat domestic and gun violence.
